Matmos with J. Lesser, John Wiese and Birds of Delay
Matmos, the experimental music duo from San Francisco, performed in collaboration with J Lesser at Auto Italia on Thursday 19th May 2011. The event marked to opening of our massive new space just off the Old Kent Road and was produced through a partnership with Upset the Rhythm. The pair, who started working together in the mid-1990s, make music out of the sounds of objects, animals, people and actions using audio samples from plastic surgery operations and the sounds of saliva in a singer’s mouth.
The evening saw huge vibrant visuals projected on a 16 foot screen behind Matmos and a choir of sensorily deprived singers chanting in harmony on the balcony.
Kelli Ali wrote:
“Matmos were joined by their collaboator, the experimental guitarist J Lesser who is also known for his pioneering approach to using guitars and synths and to create organic modular music. This was a great addition and some truly great sounds were being produced by all three artists, each seemingly in their own world, orbiting the sun of creativity to produce epic and perfectly natural, coherent, inspired pieces of music. Like the parts of a finely tuned giant clock, all turning in time with each other, Drew, M.C. and J Lesser seemed to be in absolute harmony with themselves and their music, relishing the experience of playing their exciting music on a deep and subliminal level.”
